Why Learn to Sauté Mushrooms?

Sautéed mushrooms are incredibly versatile — perfect for tossing through pasta, serving with steak, adding to soups, or layering on focaccia. But many people make the same mistakes: overcrowding the pan, not using enough heat, or seasoning too soon. Let’s fix that.

What You’ll Need:

You’ll find everything in our produce and pantry sections:

  • Mushrooms: We stock a rotating range including button, Swiss brown, portobello, and enoki

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Butter

  • Garlic or Shallots

  • Salt & Cracked Pepper

  • Optional: Fresh herbs (like thyme or parsley), balsamic glaze, or truffle oil for finishing

The Perfect Sautéed Mushroom Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 500g fresh mushrooms (button, Swiss brown, or a mix)

  • 2 tbsp olive oil or 1 tbsp olive oil + 1 tbsp butter

  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Optional: chopped parsley, balsamic glaze, or a drizzle of truffle oil from our condiment aisle

Instructions:

  1. Prep Your Mushrooms
Wipe mushrooms clean with a damp cloth — avoid washing under water as they’ll soak it up and go soggy. Slice evenly.

  2. Heat Your Pan
Use a wide sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add oil (and butter if using) and let it shimmer.

  3. Don’t Crowd the Pan
Add mushrooms in a single layer. If they don’t all fit, cook in batches. Overcrowding traps steam and prevents browning.

  4. Let Them Sit
Resist stirring for a few minutes. Let them caramelise and release their moisture.

  5. Add Garlic & Season
Once mushrooms are browned and moisture has evaporated (about 7–10 minutes), add garlic. Cook for another minute, then season with salt and pepper.

  6. Finish & Serve
Add chopped herbs or a light drizzle of truffle oil or balsamic glaze for richness.
